Children and babies respond extremely well to acupuncture. Paediatric acupuncture is gaining in popularity because of its safe and effective approach to treating illness. Many parents want to break the vicious pattern of repeated antibiotics that often do no more than mask the symptoms before the illness returns stronger than ever. Acupuncture seeks to treat the underlying cause of an illness and restore health naturally.

It is because children respond so well that needles (or ‘tickly pins’, as one 8 year old patient refers to them!) are often not necessary. Massage and acupressure are commonly all that is required. If needles are used, usually only 2 – 4 will suffice and are only inserted for seconds. Furthermore, with a special needle technique and lots of distraction, they do not even notice the needles.

Moxa is another wonderful treatment. This is a method of gently warming specific acupuncture points. It is non-invasive, feels wonderful and is very effective.

Children are sensitive to their surroundings and vulnerable to any unusual conditions in their lives. Food that is hard to digest, temperature changes, new school or childcare, trouble with siblings etc. can easily cause imbalances that if unresolved can quickly develop into health problems.

Babies and toddlers are usually treated sitting on their parent’s lap – it’s the most comfortable place for them to be. Often no needles are necessary. A combination of massage, acupressure and moxa can be the simplest, most effective treatment. Massage and acupressure can also be carried out by parents at home, which will aid recovery even quicker. Many of the illnesses babies and toddlers suffer from relate to breathing and eating.

Acupuncture for babies and toddlers aims to resolve early imbalances and to provide the best possible start to life.

Children develop at an alarming rate during this period of their lives. Illnesses tend to develop from those experienced in the first couple of years of life. Sometimes at this age recurrent infections and coughs develop on a seemingly endless cycle of antibiotics and apparent dependence on medication.

Acupuncture can help to break this cycle and restore health in children.
